A closed-circuit grinding system combining a ball mill and a hydrocyclone represents the mainstream, high-efficiency configuration for mine grinding processes. By establishing a closed-loop cycle of grinding and precise classification, it effectively eliminates issues such as over-grinding and uneven particle size distribution associated with open-circuit grinding, thereby significantly enhancing grinding efficiency and ore utilization. Stable system operation relies on the precise matching of equipment parameters, as the degree of parameter compatibility directly determines production performance.
During operation, the ball mill performs initial ore grinding, and the resulting slurry is transported to the hydrocyclone via a slurry pump. Utilizing the principle of centrifugal sedimentation, the hydrocyclone classifies the slurry: fine particles meeting specifications exit as overflow for the next processing stage, while coarse underflow particles are returned to the ball mill for regrinding, creating a "grinding-classification-regrinding" closed loop. Key operational parameters include the ball mill's rotational speed, ball charge, and throughput, as well as the hydrocyclone's feed pressure, classification cut size, and circulating load. Industry standards typically maintain a circulating load of 200%–300%, achieving classification efficiencies of 70%–90%.

Equipment selection must align with specific production conditions. Grate-discharge ball mills are suitable for small-to-medium-scale mineral processing and coarse grinding operations; they operate at 75%–85% of critical speed with a ball charge occupying 30%–40% of the mill volume, ensuring uniform product size and smooth discharge. Overflow-type ball mills are suited for high-precision fine grinding and applications requiring strict particle size control, capable of matching hydrocyclone classification cut sizes ranging from 40 to 200 μm. For large-to-medium-scale production lines, the preferred choice is a ball mill with a shell diameter exceeding 2.4 meters and an hourly output of over 30 tons, paired with a large-diameter hydrocyclone. This configuration stably accommodates high circulating loads, balances grinding precision with production efficiency, and is suitable for the vast majority of metallic and non-metallic ore grinding applications.
