Product FAQ

Should lithium ore be ground using a dry ball mill or a wet ball mill?

In the processing of lithium ore, selecting the appropriate grinding equipment is crucial for improving recovery rates and reducing energy consumption. Dry ball mills and wet ball mills are two common options, and their suitability depends on a comprehensive assessment of ore characteristics, subsequent processes, and economic factors.

Dry ball mills operate in a water-free environment and are suitable for lithium ores with low moisture content that do not easily become muddy. Their advantages include a simpler process, no need for dewatering, and conservation of water resources, making them particularly suitable for arid regions or applications with strict requirements for product moisture content. However, dry grinding easily generates dust, requiring a dust removal system, and the grinding efficiency is usually lower than wet grinding, with finer particle size control being more difficult.

In contrast, wet ball mills grind in water, effectively suppressing dust, reducing energy consumption, and achieving a more uniform particle size distribution. For minerals like spodumene with fine embedded particles requiring a high degree of liberation, wet grinding is more conducive to improving separation efficiency. Furthermore, wet grinding is often directly integrated with flotation processes, simplifying the overall process. However, its disadvantages include the need for subsequent dewatering processes such as thickening and filtration, increasing equipment investment and operating costs.
