What is the function of the compartment diaphragm in a ball mill?

The partition plate is an indispensable and critical component situated within a ball mill; acting as a "checkpoint" inside the mill, it plays a pivotal role in the material grinding process.

First and foremost, the primary function of the partition plate is to segregate the grinding media. In multi-compartment ball mills, achieving optimal pulverization results typically requires loading grinding media of different specifications—such as steel balls or steel segments—into distinct compartments. The partition plate divides the interior space of the mill shell into several independent chambers, effectively preventing the intermingling of grinding media between adjacent compartments. This ensures that the coarse-grinding compartment utilizes large-sized media to deliver powerful impact forces, while the fine-grinding compartment employs smaller-sized media for precision grinding, thereby fully harnessing the grinding capabilities of the media at each stage.

Secondly, the partition plate performs a screening function on the material. It prevents oversized particles—those that have not yet been sufficiently crushed—from migrating into the subsequent compartment or flowing directly toward the discharge end. This prevents the accumulation of coarse particles within the fine-grinding compartment (where impact forces are weaker), which would otherwise compromise overall grinding efficiency; simultaneously, it eliminates the risk of coarse particles contaminating the finished product, thereby ensuring that the final product meets the required fineness specifications.

Finally, the partition plate also serves to effectively regulate the flow rate of material within the mill. By judiciously designing the dimensions and aperture ratio of the grate slots on the partition plate, it is possible to adjust the material's fill level and flow velocity inside the mill. This allows for precise control over the material's residence time within the ball mill, thereby ensuring that the material undergoes thorough and appropriate grinding.
